The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
